Diary of a Delta Traveler
The Mississippi River Delta has been tops on my list of places to visit. In my mind, it always seemed larger than life - a deep, mysterious place of gravel-voiced Bluesmen, southern culture, riverboat gamblers and vast fields of cotton that stretched out of sight.
From simply a geographical standpoint, I knew the Delta, with its rich, fertile soil, was created by the Mississippi River over thousands of years. But I was also interested in the culture of this place, its history and why so many people view it so separately from the rest of the country. Why is the music so unique in the Delta? What's so special about catfish and grits? And just who was this fellow who sold his soul to the devil?
So here I am in the Delta. Preparing to start a journey I have longed to make. While I'm here, I plan to do a little shopping for my friends back home and try to hook a fish or two. I may even mingle among some real riverboat gamblers.
I hope you'll join me on my trip. It's going to be one great time.
