Hernando Water Tower 10K Race & 1-Mile Fun Run Oct 7, 2017, 8:00am Hernando Courthouse Square, 475 W. Commerce St, Hernando On October 7th, running enthusiasts from the Mid-South and beyond are invited to “Mississippi’s Front Porch” to participate in Hernando’s eighth annual “Water Tower 10K” road race which will highlight the city’s historic districts as well as one of its most-beloved local landmarks. The 10-kilometer race, which will start Saturday, October 7 at 8 a.m. in the heart of the city at Hernando’s Town Square, features a course that will wind through the city’s scenic, tree-lined streets in the shadow of the Hernando Water Tower. Built in 1925 and officially designated a Mississippi Landmark (the highest form of recognition bestowed on properties by the state) in 2009, the water tower has figured prominently in local lore through the years, most recently gracing the cover of the Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars’ “Hernando” CD. The 1-mile fun run will start commence after the 10K race. Proceeds from the race will benefit Hernando Excel By 5's Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) with a goal to improve early childhood education by making sure kids have access to age appropriate books. Every child who is enrolled in DPIL between the ages of one month old to five years old, will receive one book a month until their fifth birthday. Race weekend activities include post-race on Saturday and will feature live music, great door prizes and free beer, food and beverages provided by local vendors. Early registration $25 through September 23; $30 September 24 through race day; $25 Spirit Runners (T-shirt ONLY and access to after-race party). 1-mile fun run is $10.
